French company Alstom announced at the end of March that full financing has been secured for the first line of the Belgrade metro, valued at EUR 915 million, thereby meeting the conditions for the start of implementation. As recalled by eKapija, Alstom and the Serbian Ministry of Construction signed a contract for the design and construction of the transport system for the first phase of Line 1 of the Belgrade metro on December 19 last year. At that time, a protocol between the Government of Serbia and the Government of France on financing the project was also signed. The French company has now stated that it will record this contract in its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025/26, which represents standard practice following the closing of a project’s financial structure. Although Alstom’s official statement does not specify details regarding the loan structure and allocation of funds, eKapija recalls that the financing includes a loan from the French government in the amount of EUR 150 million and commercial loans of up to EUR 530 million, while the remaining portion of the funds will be provided by Serbia. The project envisages the construction of a 15-kilometer metro line from Makiško Polje to Karaburma, with 15 stations and 11 kilometers of tunnels, as well as the delivery of 32 automatic Metropolis-type metro trains. The entire system will be built and delivered on a “turnkey” basis. By recording the contract in its financial books, Alstom has effectively issued a work order for the design of the metro, procurement of materials, and the start of train production, eKapija states.
